The kids and I have been exploring all last week. I really meant to update you daily with pictures I took. My brother ordered wireless Internet too late. So now I have to work with dial up on a German computer from 1999. Quite a challenge! I will post some pictures once I am back home. Sorry!

Wednesday we went to a place called Felsenmeer. It’s a hill in the Odenwald, covered with big rocks you can climb all the way up. We go there everytime we come back home. This time we made it halfway up. My boys could have gone further, but I was completely out of breath and I was afraid the steep way down would have been too much for my Mom. She already has both hips replaced and still has trouble with one of them (That’s my excuse and I am sticking to it.)

Thursday we rode the train into Frankfurt and then took the subway to see the “Senkenberg Museum”. It holds Mummies, fossils and dinosaur bones. It was really cool.

Friday we drove to Heidelberg. We couldn’t find a parking spot close by and had to walk 1 1/2 miles to the castle. Of course as soon as we get there it starts raining on us and we had to walk all the way back to the car in the rain.

Saturday we drove into the Eifel. My Mom’s brothers still live there. We visited and checked out the old center of Mayen. It has a castle as well. I took lots of pictures.

Yesterday Lucas woke up with a sore throat and we stayed home. Today one of my tonsils is completely swollen, so no excursions today either. Well….I will drive to Ramstein to get some American things for my family, as well as some diet coke for me. I tried some here and couldn’t bring myself to drink it. It’s soooo sweet. Yuck.

I am not sure if we get to explore much more this week. My brother is getting married on Friday. Thursday will be spend getting the house ready for guests and the big party for family and friends called Polterabend. Saturday will be clean up day and Sunday we have to pack.

It’s so good to see all my family and friends and eat all the food I grew up with. Too bad I am now growing in a different direction. LOL. I will definitely need a diet when I get back home.

  7. How nice to spend time with your family, glad everyone is having a good time and hope you feel better soon. Ohh tonsils, must thank my parents for having mine yanked out when I was six. My brother was having problems with his and there must have been a two for one special cause next thing I knew there I was in the hospital. Feel better soon.

  8. Sounds like you and your family are having an awesome time Beate (minus the sore throats)! You sound like you’re right in the same neck of the woods that my mother grew up in (Kelheim). If you can go there, I would highly recommend it. It has beautiful cobblestone streets and what is called the Freedom Castle (Befreungshalle).

  13. Oh Beate I am so excited for you to be in Germany. My inlaws just got back from Germany 5 days ago. We went and spent the weekend with them and had flamacuchen (sp?). My husband was born in Germany (Canadian base) so German traditions are big in our family. Have a FANTASTIC rest of your trip. We look forward to your photos when you get home.

  15. Sounds as if you’re getting to see a lot of the countryside – I’m lookng forward to all the pictures, too! I remember our trip to Heidelberg, very nice, only we didn’t get rained on. Sorry you’re not feeling well, but it will get better – hopefully before the wedding!

  16. I’ve been to Heidelberg twice! My sister was military and stationed there. I got to visit her twice while she was there. She is there now but not in Heidelberg. Not sure exactly but I know it’s not too far from Ramstein. I loved visiting. I loved that everything was so clean and the people so respectful. I remember being on the Hopstrasse (sp) and asking a pretzel vendor if he spoke American (I was 13). My sister promptly drew me aside and told me I was being impolite, that I should ask if he spoke English. One thing I’ll never forget is the American Military kids explaining to me how I should be respectful of the German elders. If I pass an elder on the street, to ALWAYS say excuse me – and if riding the bus, to offer my seat if an elder gets on the bus. Wish we had more of that kind of attitude in the states.

  17. Thank you for sharing during your vacation. My sister travels a lot and Germany is one of her favorites (business and personal). SHe says the food is Yummy and often complains that she needs to diet when she gets home ~LOL~
I hope the wedding part goes well and that your trip home is a safe and uneventful one!

  20. Hallo in Deutschland, welcome to Germany…..

Regen in Deutschland, so ist es fast immer…. Du hast also einen typisch deutschen Frühsommer erwischt….

Rain in Germany, almost all the time in summer…. it seems to be typical for this season…

  21. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!! TDS.

  22. SOrry to hear folks haven’t been feeling well! And sorry we’ll miss out on seeing you this trip…but maybe in Floriday in February!!

And I totally know what you mean about the coke over here…I can’t drink any of the colas because they all seem even sweeter here! Oh well.

    Have fun at the wedding!

    Huggs,
    Jana

  23. Hi Beate! Happy you are having fun, but I MISS YOU!!! 😉 Can’t wait to see all your fun photos and scrap pages! 🙂

    Edith
