Rebecca was super scared in the operating chair. The Periodontist usually don’t let parents back there, but…they are also not allowed to sedate young children here in Florida. So after a while they came to get me. Rebecca calmed down and got the procedure done. I am one of those people who do REALLY poorly when seeing blood or your kids in pain. But I stayed in there padding her leg (there was no room for me to hold her hand).

Let’s just say it looks very painful. Now we have all these rules to follow. No biting into anything for 12 weeks. No sleeping on that side (tell me how to stop her from rolling over. I am up since little after four because I woke up, checked her and had to roll her over. She is still sleeping and I am anxiously waiting for her to wake up. I hope the graft hasn’t shifted), no chemicals (mouthwash, toothpaste) in her mouth, obviously no brushing close to the sites of the surgery…

She did pretty well once the pain medication kicked in. I will keep her drugged this weekend and hope that by Monday, it’s not that bad anymore.

Rebecca update:

She is up and running around. She is doing pretty good. She is still wearing her stent all day (little plastic piece to cover the roof of her mouth) and talks funny. She still drinks and eats really carefully. But I think all in all she is doing awesome for what she had done yesterday! Thank you all for your well wishes and prayers! You are the best!

  1. Wow, you are an amazing woman. I don’t know how you keep up with everything. I’m glad Rebecca’s surgery is over and she can focus on healing and feeling much better.
    Have a GREAT day.

  2. Beate – I had no idea that this was a big procedure…..please tell Rebecca we are thinking of her and sending big huggs too!!! I hope you make it through this too…..!!!

  3. Oh my goodness! I hope that the pain meds help Rebecca! Such a difficult thing for a little one to go through. I would be like you and get up constantly to check on her. Thankfully here where we live, Chloe was able to be put under while they did all her dental surgery. Hope she has a good recovery and very little discomfort. Sending you all big hugs!

  4. Oh Bless Rebecca I hope she feels better soon!

Beate have you tried pillows – if you surround her by pillows she may be less likely to attempt to roll over in her sleep. Something like a bolster pillow maybe?

    Hugs to you all

    Jukie

  5. Oh Beate. I feel for you – I can’t even imagine what that would be like. I hope Rebecca wakes up feeling so much better than yesterday – kid’s seem to be able to kick back into “high gear” fairly quickly.

  6. Yes, I was going to say pillows too. Have her get on her other side and prop pillows behind her. That will make it more difficult for her to turn over. A big pillow in front of her would help too. This worked for me when I was pregnant – to stop me from laying on my back. Good luck – be strong mommy!

  7. aw, i’ve been thinking about you and rebecca! i was going to call last night but it was too late. hope she gets better fast! let me know if i can help you with anything…

  8. I hope Rebecca heals up nicely and you can move on and never have to deal with this again! She sounds like a very brave little girl. Great job on not fainting in there too:)

  9. I’m so glad you were able to be in there with her. I’m sure that helped her tremendously. Hope she heals up quickly! Hugs

  10. Such a poor baby. I can not believe how uncomfortable she must be.

Give her big hugs from me!!!

    HUGS

  11. My prayers are with you and Rebecca. It is so hard when one of your children are hurting! Hugs!

  12. Rebecca and you will be in my prayers for a quick and trouble-free recovery! You might try sewing a tennis ball into an old T-shirt to keep her from rolling over. My step-father does this to keep from rolling onto his back because when he does, he stops breathing. He has sleep apnea. It works for him, and he’s a BIG guy. Hope this helps for Rebecca!

  13. Oh poor kiddo! My hubby has had 3 gum drafts done and from his discriptions your little girl is a real trooper to be able to handle it.

Soft hawaian rolls, juice, and chicken broth were his big meals for a couple weeks.

  14. Oh Beate, I am so sorry that Rebecca (and YOU!) are going through this!! I would be a wreck. I hope she heals quickly and the pain medication does it’s job. Take care!!!

  15. Beate,
Many hugs to Rebecca and yourself. Hopefully she will be feeling tons better soon. (And you can rest too!) Glad the procedure went ok. Do you still need All Occasion cards?
    Take Care

  16. Aw poor pet, such a shame that they couldn’t give her a little something to calm her beforehand 🙁 She’s lucky to have you, I think in a similar situation I’d have made things worse. Way to go! Hugs for both of you!

  17. Beate,

My hat off to you…you are one strong lady! To see your own child go through so much. Not only do you inspire me as a crafter but also as a Mom! So glad Rebecca is up and about …before you know it, she’ll be back to her old self.

  18. Glad you got my cards on time! I think you spelled my name wrong Ruta Santons or is that someone else? However you did spell it correctly on the picture of the cards. Typing isn’t always friendly & I have also made mistakes, we’re not perfect creatures, I always make mistakes when I’m in a hurry. It made me laugh & made me feel good that I’m not the only one who makes mistakes. Hehehe!!!

  19. Rebecca & Mommy are very brave! Glad that everything went well & she is felling fine now. Kids always bounce back really fast, they amaze me sometimes!

  20. Poor Rebecca and poor Mummy! I hope she heals super quick and doesn’t have too much pain and discomfort!

  21. I hope you have a very relaxing weekend. Maybe have her sleep in bed with you so you don’t have to get up to check on her. My kids were/are always in bed with me when my dh is out to sea/deployed, especially if they are sick. I hope its a nice an easy recovery!
What beautiful cards you got in the mail today!

  22. I am so glad she made it through surgery allright. I am a pediatric nurse and see kids come through these things SOOOOO much better than us big kids (read babies a lot of times, especially if you are male). It sounds to me like it is a super big popsicle and ice cream weekend for everyone including you. I am sorry my cards didn’t make it in time. Hopefully, you can use them for something.

  23. I love your work and frequently look at your tutorials – I couldn’t find where you wrote exactly what your daughter had done but I’m guessing from your description it was a gum tissue graft from the roof of her mouth to cover exposed roots? I have had this procedure done twice – once as a girl and again as an adult. I’m sorry she had to have this done but I’m betting you will be surprised how quickly she heals. It was not nearly as bad the second time I had it done – my oral surgeon said methods have dramatically changed since I first had it done 20+ years ago. Tell Rebecca to keep her chin up and it won’t be long before she forgets she even had it done. Thanks for all the work you do to help other crafters like me! You’re in my prayers!

  24. I am so happy to hear that all went well. I will be keeping y’all in my prayers and praying for a speedy recovery! Thanks so much for keeping us posted! 🙂

  25. Thoughts and prayers are with you and Rebecca!

  26. I knew she would do great! you are brave for watching, it’s not a pretty procedure. Another day or 2 and she will be back to almost normal.

  27. So glad to hear everything went well with Rebecca’s surgery!

  28. Poor thing! Thank God that is over with! Hugs to Rebecca and Mom! Deb

  29. What great news that everything went fine with the surgery. What a brave little one! You are an amazing woman and mother. We will pray for Rebecca and a quick recovery.

  30. Gosh…I’m so happy and thrilled to hear Rebecca’s surgery went well, and that she is recovering so nicely! Great news!!

Beautiful cards for the troops too!!

  31. Hi Beate,
I’m here at my moms…and was glad to hear Rebecca is recovering well from her surgery. Isn’t it amazing how quickly the young can recover?? Take care of yourself while you’re taking care of her!!

    Many huggs to you both!
    -Jana

  32. Hi Everyone loves you and send you beautiful cards. Thoughtful of them. What is wrong with Rebecca’s surgery.

  33. So glad to know that Rebecca is doing better than expected with her recovery and that you toughed it out being right next to her.

    Have a blessed evening,
    Nancy Grant

  34. Beate:

I hope your darling is well on her way to recovery. I’d love some information on the surgery though – I may have to have a rather massive amount of oral surgery myself and wonder what I’m up against….

Anyhow – healing good wishes to your sweet girl for a speedy recovery!!!!!! 🙂
