Tutorial on SCS - Watercoloring with Markers
Julie Buhler wrote todays tutorial for Splitcoaststampers. Julie is a very talented artist and has a great blog with a lot of tutorials and helpful hints.
This is my first card ever colored with Markers, Aqua Painter and Watercolor paper. It was FUN! If you have watercolor paper at home, make sure to try it out!
I made this card while it was dark out with regular lighting.
I don’t have an Ott-Lite yet. So if the colors are off or not that great….let’s blame it on that, allright? LOL
I resisted Bloomin’ Beautiful for the longest time. I really didnt’ think I needed this set. Well…on my last order I caved and got it anyway.
I stamped the image with Black Stazon on watercolor paper and let dry. Because I didn’t have a plan for the card yet, I stamped it a bit off and couldn’t quite center it in the circle I decided to cut with my Coluzzle. But since it was just my trial piece (or so I thought), I kept on going.
I colored the flowers first with my Cameo Coral Marker, blended the color with my Aqua Painter and then added darker ink with my Ruby Red Marker. For the leaves I first used Certainly Celery, then Old Olive, for the pot Creamy Caramel, then Close to Cocoa. For around the pot I first used Bashful Blue. Gag…that didn’t look too good. Then I went over it with More Mustard. What can I say….It was late and I didn’t want to start over (= Just call me lazy.).
The image was layered on a Chocolate chip scallop made with Nestabilities. I know, I know…I will write something up about those soon. I promise. I am getting a lot of questions about them. Let’s just say for now I LOVE them and I can’t decide for you which ones to get. I LOVE all my oval, circle, rectangles and squares.
The card base is a 5 1/2″ x 11″ piece of Ruby Red, folded in half and sponged in the front. The next two layers are 4 3/4″ square of Old Olive Prints Designer Paper and a sponged and distressed 1/4″ bigger piece of Chocolate Chip. The edges were paper pierced and sanded with the sanding block. 5/8″ rose grosgrain ribbon was tied around both layers on the right and the image was mounted over it with dimensionals.
The sentiment is from the same set, stamped in Black Stazon on watercolor paper. It was punched out with the large oval punch. Next I stamped the definition stamp from the set in More Mustard over the sentiment, blended the colors with the Aqua Painter, sponged the edges with Ruby Red and overstamped it all again with the definition stamp in More Mustard. It was taped partly over the image circle and secured with a bookplate from the Aged Copper Hodgepodge hardware kit.
Okay…I know it’s not the best sample, but I just didn’t have more time to play yesterday. I am still trying to catch up from being gone on vacation and slacking because Rick was home. Hopefully soon I am back to my organized self, showing off challenge cards made for SCS challenges.
Personal Note:
The doctor said Lucas eye was because of allergies. No pink eye. The swelling is completely gone this morning. Dang…I should have taken a picture of it yesterday!
The appointment we got on base was close to Rebecca’s dental appointment (no others available). So after we finally got the medication (if you are military, you know what I mean) we rushed over to the dentist. Only five minutes late they still saw us.
Being in the dental chair again freaked Rebecca out a bit and she cried almost through the whole thing. I tell you, sometimes I wish I would drink alcohol! But…we made it. The teeth are out and she is feeling fine. Lets do that again in two weeks when two more teeth are being pulled.

WOW, Beate — this is gorgeous! I love the depth of color on your image!!!
Wow…. wow doesn’t even describe it.. it’s LOVELY, WONDERFUL and AWESOME.. just like you!

I love your card! It looks like you can reach over and sniff how pretty those flowers smell.
wow! that was your first time using the technique?!!! I have been practicing for over a month and they don’t look half as good as yours!!! Awesome job!
Beautiful as always! Glad to hear the kids are doing well. I’ll have a drink for you after all that stress!
I’ll have to check out Julie’s tutorial - her blog is another on of my favourites!
Have a good one -G
GORGEOUS, Beate! WOW! I will have to try this! So glad the appts went well and that it was only allergies! Sorry Rebecca had such a time at the dentist. . .I can only imagine the memories it brings back!
OH my gosh. And they say we have the best medical care in the world.ha Hope the kids are doing better. Why is it that by the time you get into the doctor, things don’t look as bad (the eye). Then they don’t believe you how bad it looked.LOL Have a great day. Pretty cards…
HOLY WOW - for your first one, you sure ROCKED it!! Your color combo is awesome, and thanks for the opportunity to share what I love!!
Okay, that is really gorgeous - I did not get this set either and now I have to rethink it *sigh* - I can’t believe it’s your first time, it’s too dang beautiful!!!
I am so very glad the kids are doing okay, it’s stressful enough when both parents are home….poor Rebecca, I went through the same thing with my son….I wanted to drink too, LOL! And, what a scrapbooker thing to say - should have taken his picture - TeeHee!!!!
*STAMPIN HUGS* Alex
How do you do my friend…..every single card is amazing !!! This card is definately no exception !!! Your coloring is perfect..and the paper piercing just adds so much to the beauty of this card…..congrats on another award winner
Your card is lovely Beate! I love to watercolour with my SU! markers. It’s fun and easy.
I’m glad to hear the kids are both doing okay today. Too bad she has to go back again in a couple of weeks…poor thing!
Okay, first off: “I know it’s not the best sample, but I just didn’t have more time to play yesterday.” Seriously, it would take me a week of practice to produce something this beautiful!!!!
Second, glad the kiddies are OK. I am not looking forward to taking my kids to the dentist for the first time. I can so feel your pain. And Rebecca’s too! I also had baby teeth pulled at a young age. She’ll recover soon… sorry you have to go through it all over again!!!
Ooooo……..sooo pretty!!! The coloring is stunning!! I just bought some watercolor paper and haven’t tried it yet….I am sooo not talented with my aquapainter!!! LOL I just need more practice!
This is absolutely gorgeous, Beate!! You’re one amazing girl!
Happy to hear Lucas didn’t have pink eye! Hope Rebecca is feeling okay after her surgery. Hugs to you, girl!!!
OMG! That’s just beautiful! Any chance you can do a watercolouring video tutorial? I just can’t seem to do it right and am so jealous whenever I see such beautiful work! Great job Beate! Thanks for sharing with us so generously all the time!
Gorgeous card, Beate!
Hope the kiddos are all doing well and feeling better.

Great card…you’ve got talent!!! (we already knew that!)
A rough time at the dentist! Sorry, good luck again.
Love the colors, you are so awesome. Glad your daughter is okay. I can remember taking my girls many years ago to have teeth extracted, wasn’t a plesant time for them either.
This is a great card - you are way too critical of yourself. The watercoloring is fantastic and I love it!
Ohmygoodness, Beate! This is just stunning! I look forward to giving this one a try! It’s sooo very beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing and for all you do! Take care!
I love that stamp set, so much fun to paint! Haven’t tried it with markers yet though — you’ve inspired me to give it a shot.
You’ll love an Ott Lite…of course, in Florida you probably have lots of bright, sunny light coming in your windows, but here in Ohio, I rely on my Ott Lite all winter long (and a many cloudy spring, summer, and fall days too!)
Girl, that card is gorgeous! Looks like you’ve been doing it forever! It’s got a really dreamy look, I’m off to try this technique (again…I’ve tried before, but to no avail, lol!). love those colors too!
Happy Belated Birthday! Love this card, the flowers are colored so beautifully!
Be glad you didn’t have pink eye! We just went through that and it is EXTREMELY contagious!! Have to put drops in each eye for a week (twice to three times a day). Poor child looks like they’ve been crying forever. Luckily once medication starts it goes away pretty quickly. Give your little girl a big hug for making it through that dental appt. Can imagine how frightened she is. Lovely colouring on the main image too!
Beate are you kidding? This is a fabulous card and a beautiful sample!!!
And I remember those busy days trying to get kids here and there. My DH traveled a lot and I was often a single mom during the week. I can relate on a small scale although not completely as he was never in a lot of danger. (He did travel to China and the Middle East on occasion.) But he was generally home on the weekends to give me a break. Hang in there girl and be more gentle with yourself! You have a ton on your plate right now. And this card really is gorgeous… so there.
